One of the main struggles that I often see women of color expressing is maintaining healthy skin. You know, that naturally flawless glow. I too am always in search of a new skincare routine tuning into fellow Facebook posts requesting the best remedies. I used to find myself switching skincare products way to frequently with the same dull mediocre results, not to mention spending ridiculous amounts of money with NO bang for the Buck, eh! Let’s just say I’ve been the least bit of impressed. I fall into the category of having really dry sensitive skin so It’s vital that I do my research before I trust the use of just any product. I’ll admit my main struggles, in which one of them I have previously blogged about include :
- My lack of water intake. (Yes I include lemon, it’s still a no)
- Dairy (It’s just not healthy y’all)
You would think a normal person would understand that suffering from dry skin probably insinuates the bodies need for increased hydration right? Trust me, I fully and completely know this yet my H20 intake is remarkably pitiful. Drinking an adequate amount of water daily is important for overall good health because water aids in digestion, circulation, absorption and even excretion. … your skin is made up of cells. Skin cells, like any other cell in the body, are made up of water. Hence why it’s so important.
My new found attraction on my strolls through my local Kroger and/or Sprouts include picking up Essentia Water. Essentia is a ionized alkaline water which I personally enjoy for a very reasonable price in my opinion compared to other highly advertised H20 brands. I’ve also recently purchased a very cute measurement water bottle from Amazon(the G.O.A.T) which distracts me from focusing on the fact that I’m drinking water frequently throughout the day. Hey, works for me…Give it a shot!
There a lots of options!
Mac & Cheese, Sour Cream, Blueberry Dannon Yogurt, Caramel Macchiato with extra whip & caramel drizzle…just a few of my absolute favorites which are also extremely harsh on my skin. One of my best friends, whom also happens to be a healthy food advocate preaches to me on a regular basis about how bad Diary is for the human body. The more I ignore her medical and health advice, the more she’s proven to be right. Each time I indulge in a night of pizza and wine, I wake up with a huge pimple of my cheek or unwanted and very unattractive dry patches. I am in no way a health food guru or an expert on food allergies…I am only simply voicing my personal experiences with the above. I haven’t gone the extra mile on giving up dairy completely(which I do plan to do very soon following more research), however I have dramatically decreased my intake. I have noticed a difference in my skin as a result.
I’m not going to go into detail the tons of facial cleansers, toners, and moisturizers that I’ve also gone into debt purchasing due to high quality promotion. I understand that what works for some isn’t always the case for others, that’s the beauty of being an individual. However I will say that a good moisturizer is key! It will do wonders along with maintaining CLEAN skin amongst your choice of cleansers. My personal go-to routine currently includes
-Image Skin Care cleanser, Witch Hazel, Olehenrisken Dark Spot Toner and Belif Moisturizing Bomb purchased at Sephora.
So far they get the job done!
